The skin is a medium by which fluid loss is prevented, therefore it stores water. It also gets rid of waste in the form of sweat (sweating is a means of regulating body temperature). There are 2 main types of sweat glands - Apocrine sweat gland (which has a little bit of fatty and protein substances) is found in the Underarms and Genital areas while the Eccrine (contains mainly salt and water) is found all over the body. The sweat glands mainly function in regulating body temperature. The other skin glands are sebaceous glands, which secrete an oily substance called sebum that keeps hair moist, they are found everywhere except the soles and palms. The ceruminous glands produce earwax and the Mammary glands secrete milk.
Under the microscope, there are five layers of the epidermis, the topmost layer (stratum corneum) sheds almost every 28 days. In other words, the skin has a self-renewal process.
The Normal Flora
Almost every part of the body has a certain group of germs which contribute to the natural environment of the respective area. On an average healthy person, they are quite harmless.
MELANIN
