Why I prefer hair waxing when compared to shaving

Most of Us think 'pain' when waxing is mentioned. To be honest, it was the same for me, this is why it took me over a month before I gathered the courage to book my first appointment (this was about 5 years ago). Since then, I haven't looked back. I still remain loyal to shaving though, lol.

What is waxing?

In this context, it is a means by which unwanted Body and facial hair are removed. In this post, I refer mostly to Spa waxing, done by an aesthetician.

Items needed:

  • Waxing gel.

  • Applicator, usually a wooden spatula.

  • Heating compartment, to melt the gel and keep it warm.

  • Wax Strips.

  • Sanitizing lotion/wipes, to sterilize the skin before applying the warm, melted waxing gel.

  • Moisturizing calming cream, to be applied after the procedure. For calming any redness and for moisture

Advantages(as compared to shaving)

  • Removes hair from the roots, as such, it takes a long time before new outgrowth is seen. As time goes by, the hair growth rate reduces and it becomes thinner.

  • Decreased risk for bumps and infection, this is mostly because hygienic steps are taken.

  • Fewer chances of injury, no blades are involved

  • Silky smooth feeling of the skin

The not-so-good sides

  • Pain; is a common feature and it is almost always unavoidable. However, the aftermath is worth all of the pain.

  • Irritation/Allergy; People with sensitive skin may have reactions to the gel. In this case, it is best to inform the spa beautician. There are so many varieties these days for every skin type.

  • Only when hair is certain length; The hair has to be about half a cm in length or more for one to be able to wax. This is a big downer for me when it comes to armpits.

  • Price tag; Depending on the part of the body that requires waxing, prices differ. Location also determines the cost. If this is an issue, learning to DIY (Do It Yourself) will save Your expenses. There are easy-to-use waxing products available, an example is the beans wax.

I hope You enjoyed reading.

Do let me know in the comments what Your preferred method of hair removal is.

  5. I have only tried home waxing and couldn't get on with it. I prefer shaving although it's a pain doing it every 2 days since moving to Portugal and no longer being able to hide regrowth!

  6. I'm not massively into the thing around body haor removal. I shave my legs and armpits but waxing always seems a lot of messing. the pain element seems to put people off

  10. If you find one way is more effort than another, then you can do one thing in winter and something different in summer.
